Speech-language pathologists determine the appropriate treatment by first understanding a complete patient history combined with a variety of specialized assessments, often working within interdisciplinary teams. Services are provided for infants, children and adults.

Referrals to a speech-language pathologist are made by doctors or other health care workers, public health nurses, infant development specialists, teachers, family members or others that are involved in the care of the individual. Self-referrals can also be made.
